About Underground Venues

Our Mission Statement

Underground Venues is built on the principle of the most art for the most people - of the highest and most varied quality and by the most varied range of groups.

By utilising empty spaces to create powerful performance areas and implementing reliable administrational and promotional infrastructures, we strive towards a situation where everyone - from professional touring companies to new, un-financed and unrecognised groups - can have the opportunity to perform in professionally run spaces. Providing them the necessary resources and support, and a real chance of achieving critical and popular success.

Through our application procedure we welcome any act, by any group, in any genre which we feel will benefit from the use of our spaces and provide an original and enjoyable experience for our audiences. By taking a holistic approach to programming we aim to provide the most varied collection of work with a particular emphasis on encouraging young people and new groups, as well as art forms or groups not usually represented in Buxton or the High Peak. We organise our spaces so as to provide the highest quality and quantity of opportunities and make them available to the most people.

We oppose censorship in any form and both believe in and encourage freedom of expression. We aim to make the Buxton Fringe, and any other Festival we take part in, a place where all can experiment and innovate without fear of financial or artistic repercussions. This liberal approach to the arts is coupled with a practical and sincere approach to business. By operating professionally, despite a volunteer workforce, we allow the smallest of groups to gain the audiences they deserve, with a business structure that makes Underground a reliable and sustainable venture which can take the financial risk on behalf of our acts.
