Our Spaces & Other Info

Underground Venues runs two main performances spaces in the Festival Fringe: The Pauper's Pit and The Barrel Room. Almost all shows which are not music or stand-up comedy will be given slots in the Pauper’s Pit. Some small-scale comedy acts may be more suitable to the Barrel Room but we will inform you if this is the case.

The Pauper’s Pit has a basic sound and lighting setup, with a number of fixed lighting, a couple of refocusable lanterns, and a fixed projector. Your own effects and small changes can be made, but are limited to what you can set-up in the allocated time. Everything you wish to do must be outlined in your application, or we cannot guarantee to accomodate it.

The Barrel Room has a PA system with three microphones and two DI inputs. Anything extra you invision bringing should again be outlined in your application form.

As standard, companies in The Pauper's Pit have 20 minutes set-up in the space before their show and 10 minutes to strike after, five minutes of each of these is shared withthe adjacent companies. These times include everything: setting the stage, any technical adjustments, and warming up beforehand; and clearing any mess, removing your properties, and re-setting anything you've changed afterwards. The Barrel Room operates in a similar way, although there may be a little more time between acts in some cases.
Whichever space you're applying for, please let us know in your application if this may cause you difficulty.

Storage is also extremely limited at the venue. In most cases, companies can only store small props, costumes, instruments etc, and must take away larger items. We can not usually consider exceptions to this rule, but if this may pose a problem please state this on your application form.

“I wish I could have been there longer... you all did a fantastic job. It was a pleasure to be part of it all!”
George Telfer, Performer, Dotted Line Productions, Macclesfield
