The Beloved Technical Team 2008

Full-Time Positions

Underground is now recruiting full-time members of staff for its 2008 season. This is the perfect opportunity for those hoping to work in the theatre industry to get valuable experience of running a Fringe venue.

Three years on, Underground remains the largest venue on the Buxton Fringe with two spaces, a Fringe Club and an all-day Box Office catering for up to 50 different shows and events each year. Staff members join a vibrant team of students and professionals and are responsible for delivering a uniquely varied and high-quality programme of comedy, theatre, music, children’s shows as well as a buzzing fringe environment.

This provides a truly unique opportunity for students and young people to be involved at a senior level in theatre venue of this status.

As a permanent member of staff, Underground will provide you:

You will be expected to commit to:

All staff also have plenty of chance to see performances and hang-out with performers, producers and other theatre professionals.

Front of House & Box Office Manager

This involves taking charge of the Box Office (as well as Information Desk) in its various roles as well as the ushering of shows. You will be in charge of a team of Box Office assistants and ushers and will serve as the main point of contact for all audience members – as well as the performers to some extent.

This job involves meeting and dealing with large numbers of people everyday and so friendliness and personality are key characteristics as well as politeness and good customer service skills. You will also need great organisation skills as you will be responsible for making sure everything outside of the actual performances runs smoothly.

This job is the perfect experience for anyone considering a job in theatre management, arts administration, or customer relations. It will also be particularly enjoyable to anyone who likes taking charge of events and meeting people.

Technical Manager

This involves taking charge of the technical side of both Underground spaces. Although both spaces are already equipped you will be involved in setting up both spaces during the get-in and introducing companies to their space during their rehearsal time.

You will head a small team including the Assistant Technical Manager as well as part-time technical operators and other helpers. This team will be responsible for catering for all companies technical needs, operating any shows who do not provide their own technician and looking after the spaces from day-to-day.

The job also involves liaising with companies from May to discuss technical capabilities. You can also be involved in designing the technical layout of the spaces and controlling the way the venue is run – depending on your own interests.

The job is perfect for someone with a good experience of the technical side of theatre who wants to take their knowledge and skills further in a more varied position with high responsibility. This is a great opportunity to be involved technically in a venue instead of just a show and widen their technical career possibilities.

Email to apply and for more information.

Assistant Technical Manager

Encompassing similar tasks and opportunities to the previous job, this position involves working under the Technical Manager. Although very similar in terms of day-to-day tasks and workload, this does not involve as much responsibility or work in advance and thus does not require the same level of experience.

This is perfect for someone with some technical experience who wants to widen their knowledge and experience of all aspects of theatre.
